Uses and Abuse of social media- HEARTUMIGHT extends media literacy training

The student based anti-hatespeech organization- HeartUmight has, as part of her organized efforts to curb ethnic based hate speech extended the media and information literacy program initiated in Bayero University Kano to the non- University community of Kano State. The program which was organized in collaboration with CARE (Learning and Academic center), targeted at risk youth whose interactions online directly or indirectly result in ethnic based hate speeches.

Following the lectures delivered at the program, a group of youths of multiethnic backgrounds identified certain malicious words used by their tribes against other tribes as they tenderly countered and discouraged the use of such words and other forms of stereotyping.

The youths in their good numbers have signed up to the HeartUmight Peace Ambassadors Network (PAN) as they began uploading videos of themselves discouraging ethnic based hate speeches.

In a remark by a student member of HeartUmight – Amb. Mushood, he disclosed that HeartUmight is in this campaign term, focusing on enlightening at risk youth and making them play active roles in countering ethnic based hate speeches.
