Students of the Department of Information and Media Studies and Mass Communication Bayero University Kano has been tasked to use the instrumentality of their field in countering hate speech online.

This was stated by Mallam Saminu Umar, a Lecturer with the Department of Information and Media Studies on Thursday 25th April, 2019 during a Lecture on “Countering Hate Speech Online.”

Mallam Saminu stated that with hate speech taking on an alarming increase online, it is important to understand the motivation behind it in order counter it effectively.

Mr. Saminu explains that more often, words are deliberately conjured to express hate, hence the need to understand their reasons, situations and motivation in order to promote a decisive counter action.

He charged the students to take it upon themselves as a responsibility to ensuring that such dangerous words are watered down to the barest minimum in our online culture.

According to the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), about 96% of hate speech online are so raw without any effort to use coded language in communicating to the intended group.
